چکیده

1. Introduction In this chapter, we introduce and discuss the hypothesis that the pervasive use of shape-based meronymy as a resource for the expression of spatial relations in a language may bias its speakers against the use of relative frames of reference (FoRs). This hypothesis is currently being tested in the project " Spatial Language and Cognition in Mesoamerica " (MesoSpace). The Mesoamerican linguistic area is the starting point for our investigation because of the preliminary evidence for highly productive meronymies (MacLaury 1989; Levinson 1994; inter alia) and the disuse (Brown & Levinson 1992) or non-dominant use (Bohnemeyer & Stolz 2006) of relative frames. Using a battery of tools, the MesoSpace researchers have been probing frame use and the productivity of geometric meronyms in 13 indigenous languages of the Mesoamerican area, two non-Mesoamerican indigenous languages spoken nearby, and several varieties of Spanish. Here, we present preliminary evidence from just one language of the sample, Yucatec Maya. The Yucatec data indicate a fully productive meronymy for surfaces and one of somewhat more limited productivity for volume parts. In line with our hypothesis, intrinsic uses of the surface meronyms dominate.

Objects Feeling Objects in a MultiView Object Space

User interfaces that allow the direct manipulation of conceptu al objects with adequate semantic feedback are not su ciently supported by the user interface tools of today We have designed a layered archi tecture for user interface objects based upon the de nition of a three di mensional object space for object manipulation In this space the usual user centered events are replaced by a logical ...

Generating an Indoor space routing graph using semantic-geometric method

The development of indoor Location-Based Services faces various challenges that one of which is the method of generating indoor routing graph. Due to the weaknesses of purely geometric methods for generating indoor routing graphs, a semantic-geometric method is proposed to cover the existing gaps in combining the semantic and geometric methods in this study. The proposed method uses the CityGML...

Space as a Semiotic Object: A Three-Dimensional Model of Vertical Structure of Space in Calvino’s Invisible Cities

Following the “spatial turn” of the last 3 decades in humanities and social sciences and the structure of semiotic object, this research studies space as the main semiotic object of Calvino’s (1972) Invisible Cities. Significance of this application resides in examining the possibility of providing a more concrete methodology based on the integration of Zoran’s (1984) 3 vertical levels of const...

Spatial Distribution and Visual Analysis of Architectural Semantic Features

When facing partial evidence on how architectural objects evolved through time (often due to uncompleted information), it is important to provide the researcher with tools for a cross-examination of cases that may help him better delineate possible values for lacking information. In the case of architecture, we deal with data that can be attached to a given location (distribution in time and sp...

Declarative Semantics in Object-Oriented Software Development - A Taxonomy and Survey

One of the modern paradigms to develop an application is object oriented analysis and design. In this paradigm, there are several objects and each object plays some specific roles in applications. In an application, we must distinguish between procedural semantics and declarative semantics for their implementation in a specific programming language. For the procedural semantics, we can write a ...
